I want to explain how to make a decision about what to invest in when you are first getting your health coaching business started.

Maybe you’ve been around the health coaching space for a while and you are struggling to figure out where to put your money or how to budget for specific things.

You’ve probably seen all of the stuff that comes through your social media feed about websites and hiring people to launch your business or making sure you have the email platforms, etc. I know they come across because they come across mine too!

I want to share these tips and tricks with you because I have spent a lot of money on mistakes that I made while figuring this all out.

When you start out as a health coach, you may be depending on your spouse’s income, or maybe you are working a full-time job and just trying to fit this health coaching thing in. You are working towards the goal of quitting that full-time job and taking this on as your new full-time gig someday. There are many different financial positions that health coaches are in when they first started.

I was fortunate enough to have the support of another income, but I also wanted to have my own money and I wanted to make my own way and be able to build a nest egg for myself. So I was personal training and making my own money so adding the health coaching aspect into it was a natural thing. When I decided to quit the personal training and focus on health coaching, I really had to dig deep to find out what was necessary to protect myself since I was no longer working for another facility.

Insurance is the number one thing you need to have. You hope you never have to use it, but the goal is to have it there for that safety net in case you do. I suggest you look into HPSO or Philadelphia and you get on the phone with them and have a conversation. Tell them what you do and then have them send any information to you in an email so you have it in writing and you know what you’re getting. It’s impossible to get a quote through an online source without them really knowing what you are doing with your business. Just make sure they are really clear on what you do before you get advised.

Some people call it health coaching, some call it life coaching – which is fine because if you’re following anything we do at the institute, we’re doing a little bit of everything! We work on stress, fun, relationships, as well as health and food. So get your insurance!

The second thing you need to invest in is your business license. If you haven’t read the previous blog post about whether or not you need a license, absolutely look into what you need to be legal in your community, your city, your state, and your county!

Lastly, what you need is to have a presence. To determine what kind of presence, you need to look at if you are only going to be out in your community, or if you’re going to be working online, or both.

If you’re only going to be in your community, it’s not absolutely necessary to have a website but it is always helpful. If you’re only going to be working online, or doing both, you need to have a place where people can find you.

Do you need to have a big fancy website to get started? No, you don’t because it’s pricey. Designing websites and having someone to do your copy, sales pages, landing pages, and opt-ins all adds up. You just need a place for people to find you, a way to contact you and a way you can gather their email address.

This doesn’t need to be anything more than having a basic homepage with some tabs at the top. Remember to keep it simple! You need to have a place where they can email you. You can do this by having a form for them to fill out or just have your email listed with a simple opt-in on the sidebar of the website so you can gather their emails.

This is really all you need to get started – it’s simply a place they can find you. Just build your website as you go. Don’t think it’s the most important thing.

Something you do not need to spend money on, especially if you’re not going out into the community, is to pay someone for a logo. If you don’t have the money to do it, and especially if you don’t even know what you want it to look like yet, it’s not necessary.

Sure, if you want something to put on postcards, brochures, flyers, and things like that you can accomplish this by having a really nice picture taken. Have it be a picture of you doing something that you love when it comes to your business, or doing something you love in your life.

So that’s it! Develop the safety net, or the low-risk park of your practice. Make sure you’ve got your licensing covered. And get yourself out there and have a place for people to find you. Don’t worry about the tiny little details – take baby steps!
