There are so many moving pieces to building an online business…and so many “experts” trying to convince you that their approach is better than everyone else’s.
I’m here to tell you that while yes, building an online coaching business does require effort, energy and investment…it doesn’t have to be as hard as some make it out to be!
Here are five of the most important (and often overlooked) steps you should focus on if you want to become a successful health coach in the online space.
Don’t Focus on a Specific Niche
One of the big lessons I teach health coaches is that you don’t need a niche to be a successful health coach. As health coaches, we should be able and willing to coach anyone with a heartbeat towards improved health.
The reason why I preach this is because I’ve seen far too many new coaches spend months upon months obsessing over their niche and then they spend thousands of dollars creating a website and marketing materials to support this, only to change their minds shortly after.
Many have found that by making this mistake, not only have they wasted time and money, they’ve unintentionally turned away potential clients who are outside of that niche.
I don’t want this to happen to you.
That’s why I encourage coaches to keep their marketing more general, at least until they are more experienced as a coach.
Down the road, you may find that you truly enjoy working with a specific target market and that’s when you can tailor your marketing to attract those people.
Get Testimonials Right Away!
One of the first tasks you’ll want to focus on when you’re just getting started is getting testimonials. Testimonials are going to make your online marketing 90% easier.
If you don’t have testimonials yet, then offer your service for free or low-cost to a select group of people that fit within your target audience.
Have them sign a contract prior to working together that they’ll provide you with a video testimonial at the end of your relationship together.
I highly encourage that you get them to commit to a video testimonial and not a written testimonial. You can turn a video testimonial into a written testimonial, but not vice versa.
Once you have these testimonials, put them on your YouTube channel and on your website. Another great idea is creating blog posts out of these testimonials and then linking out to these blog posts in your email sequence.
Build Your Email List
The next most important task to focus on is building your email list.
To build your email list, you’ll want to create something free and of value that resonates with your target audience and builds the know, like and trust factor. This could be a webinar, a video training, an eBook, etc.
After opting in to receive this offer, the prospect will go on to your email list where they should enter a nurture sequence.
A nurture sequence is a series of emails, usually 6-10 emails, that continue to build the relationship with your prospect.
You’ll want to sign up for an email marketing provider, such as MailChimp or ConvertKit and set up your nurture sequence inside of your account so that it drips out to your new prospects over the course of a week or two.
Focus LESS on giving away free “Band-Aid” information (which is what many marketers will tell you), and MORE on 1) sharing your story and making an emotional connection and 2) illustrating the results you help your clients achieve as a health coach (this is where those transformational blog posts come in handy).
Throughout the nurture sequence, you can sprinkle in the opportunity for them to book a discovery call with you to learn more about how you can help them achieve the results they’re looking for.
Get Visible and Stay Consistent
This is such an important, yet overlooked step…one that makes many health coaches REALLY uncomfortable.
If you’re building an online business, you MUST get visible as often as possible and STAY consistent.
This means doing live videos in your Facebook group (yes you should be building one of those too), creating Instagram stories, doing live webinars, sending out consistent emails to your list (if you don’t, they’ll forget about you), and yes…pitching your services!
Visibility is KEY in the online space if you want to stand out from the competition and connect to your target audience.
Book Discovery Calls
I’m so surprised by how many health coaches don’t make it a priority to book discovery calls with their clients. This is such a huge missed opportunity.
As a health coach, you need to be offering free discovery calls to potential clients on a regular basis!
You should be pitching these discovery calls to your email list, to your Facebook group, within your blog posts, etc.
The easiest way to do this is to get an account with an online scheduling software such as Calendly or Acuity and set up 20-minute discovery call slots.
Before booking an appointment with you, make sure you also include a series of intake questions so you can learn more about the prospect, their struggles and what sort of help they’re seeking. This will help you adequately prepare for the call.
During the call, you should focus on figuring out where your prospective client is in their health journey, what they’ve tried that hasn’t worked for them in the past, how committed they are to achieving their health goals, and whether they are the right fit for your coaching.
If they are the right fit, then confidently pitch your coaching program and enroll your new clients over the phone!
These steps aren’t the ONLY way to stand out and market your health coaching business online, but they are some of the most important steps when you’re just getting started.
Please don’t expect to just throw up a website and have clients pouring into your business!
Becoming a successful health coach in the online space requires creating an offer that your clients want, showcasing your results and getting that offer and those results in front of your prospective clients!
