So here’s the deal with business licenses.

If you are opening a business, it is important to call your local city and county office and find out what kind of business license you may need to run your health coaching practice.

When I started my business, I had gotten my license and thought I was all set up. Two years, yes – TWO YEARS! – into my business, I was approached by the county. They told me that I owed specific taxes and that they had not received my updated license. I had no idea that I even needed to have one!

Here I was, coaching away and thinking I was doing everything the right way, and in all reality, I was missing a business license because our city and county were separate.

Thankfully I didn’t have too many things that were past due. I didn’t owe too much money but it still threw me into a panic!

When it comes to operating my business, I want to do everything by the book legally and I want to make sure I’m completely covered – I mean who doesn’t want that?! I definitely do not want a bill to show up from three years ago telling me I owe thousands of dollars.

More importantly, I want to stay in line so that people feel like I can be trusted by the way I’m running my business.

So, how do you figure this out? How do you know if you’re staying in line?

  1. Go to your state website and look up information for your county. This will lead you to all the areas that you need to start looking up business information.
  2. Go to your county website; this is where you will find information such as how to live in the community, what schools to attend, etc. It will also tell you how to run a business in the community.
  3. Go to the government’s Small Business Administration website. This will take you to where you can find information about the right license or permits that you need to have in place.

It will really depend on your state, but I highly recommend checking out SBA.GOV, as well as your city and state websites.

This may sound like a lot of work but it will lead you through why it’s important to obtain the correct business licenses.

Don’t do what I did and forget about any of them!

You also need to check out what’s required for you to file taxes while you are on the state website. It’s always a good idea to have an accountant, attorney, or somebody that specializes in whatever area you are trying to take care of. So, if you’re trying to make sure you’re up to date with all of your tax information, you want to have a good accountant in your pocket.

Just like when you’re setting up your website and figuring out what terminology you can use legally, you want to have the right training along with an attorney that knows what the laws are. (You can read more about this topic by checking out this blog post.)

Another resource you can use is LegalZoom. This is an online resource that is easily accessible.

It is so important for health coaches, since we do not have any regulation or support, to know that we are doing things the right and legal way. Credibility is huge! We also want to feel good in what we are doing and make sure we can sleep soundly at night.

Of course, you can always visit us at the Institute for Functional Health Coaching for tips, trainings, and more! We want to help you make sure you’re setting your business up in a low-risk way that you can feel good about!
